What is the course about?

In Heli's popular course, pianists come together to gain new insight into all aspects of their playing. We aim to clarify the musical intentions and then work out, in detail, how to bring them to life. Participants are invited to choose pieces from the given list: own choice pieces are also welcome. Diploma candidates will find their course useful, both for new ideas and for platform experience. A clear timetable will ensure fair time allocation. It will consist of both group sessions and individual tutorials.

What will we cover?

Each group session will involve three or four pianists, working in turn on their chosen pieces. The others are drawn in to discussions arising from the playing, with emphasis in encouragement and positive thinking. Individual sessions allow Heli to help the pianists address specific issues; a special workshop will focus on a piece with particular challenges.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

You will come out of this course as a more inspired, more confident and capable – and a more motivated pianist.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Pianists on this course need to be active players at a reasonably advanced level.

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

The group sessions will involve three or four participants who will work on their chosen pieces; the group will take part in the discussions in a positive, encouraging atmosphere. Short individual tutorials allow Heli to help the pianists with particular issues. A timetable keeps the course running smoothly and ensures fairness of time allocation. Preparation is essential but performances need not be polished - problems are welcome!

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

The list of suggested pieces as well as the own choice piece list will be given in advance but participants are expected to bring their own scores. There is, however, an extensive library at Benslow Music available to course members.

Bring scores for your own pieces, and as many as you like of the other pieces on the list. You will receive a list of own choices so that you can bring the music for those, too. There is a library; you may use your iPad.

Is there anything I need to bring?

As above, your scores!
