What is the course about?

Chamber music in small numbers encourages versatility and scope for countless instrumental and sound possibilities. Comprised of flute, cello and piano or harpsichord, this grouping embraces the different genres and styles of the music from the Baroque (JS Bach’s Musical Offering) to contemporary composers (Nikolai Kapustin and Malcolm Forsyth).

The tutors are Lisa Nelsen (flute, alto flute), Julian Metzger (cello) and Michelle Santiago (piano). Collectively, they are an ensemble whose purpose is to engage listeners and to expose audiences to an exciting repertoire and beautiful combination of instruments.

What will we cover?

As demand increases from flute, cello and pianists for more opportunities to play together in chamber groups at Benslow, Lisa Nelsen, Julian Metzger and Michelle Santiago are offering sessions for them to play and perform in varying forms. Ensembles can be formed during the course, and pre-formed trios are most welcome!

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

…play and work on music together through the weekend, prepare for playing in group classes, learn new music and how to play with this ensemble setting…and meet new people!!

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Standard: Confident, Skilful

Instrumentation is flute, cello and piano. Pre-formed ensembles are encouraged

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

Lisa Nelsen (flute), Julian Metzger (cello) and Michelle Santiago (piano) will lead workshops and coach participants in duos and trios, as well as tutor each individual instrument in separate classes. Tutors will also provide a few pieces for participants to play together in the 'free' sessions. Tutors will be guiding the participants through the art of performance and presentation during the course. There will be ample opportunity to perform in short, informal concerts…in a very safe and friendly environment.

Preparation will be required; A list of repertoire will be sent to participants before the course and music can be found on platforms such as IMSLP.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Your music, an open mind and the readiness to have fun!
