What is the course about?

The course will show how to identify different styles of music and performance for playing overtures, dances and counterpoint. The course will work on ensemble skills, either playing together or responding to other parts. Similarities and differences between different national styles will be noted, e.g. French for dance music and Italian for counterpoint. All the music uses rhetorical techniques of composition which when understood will assist in bringing out the musical points and affects using harmony, intervals, repetition with variation and rhythmic patterns.

What will we cover?

Baroque bow strokes and style. Rhythm patterns of baroque dances. How to identify and express the ideas in the music appropriately. Rhetorical invention: how varied patterns of repetition are used to create the music.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

Identify and choose the appropriate style and bow technique for particular genres. Improved ensemble skills, responding to other players in the group.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Intermediate technical skills will be used to create an advanced stylistic result. Continuo players should be able to play from unfigured bass-line.

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

The group will work together to learn how to respond to the other parts using rhetorical ideas. To prepare, read Judy’s books, about playing in the French style and the Baroque dance in Baroque String Playing ‘for ingenious learners’ and musical rhetoric in ‘The Weapons of Rhetoric, a guide for musicians and audiences’.

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

No, it will be provided by the tutor on the course.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Baroque instrument or modern instrument with gut strings. Baroque bows essential.
