Learn how to make professional sounding demo recordings and promotional videos, as well as discussing how to use social media to help raise your profile.

To register your interest in this course please email info@benslowmusic.org

In this weekend course, Alastair and Gerard will guide you through how to make professional sounding demo recordings and promotional videos, as well as discussing how to use social media to help raise your profile. The course is aimed at classical musicians (though those working in other genres are also welcome to attend), and no prior experience of recording or music technology is necessary. The course will start right from the beginning, but will also go on to cover more advanced techniques. In between sessions students will be encouraged to practice the skills that they have learnt so that by the end of the course they could have produced a demo recording and video and shared this on social media.

A significant amount of the course will be focussed on Logic Pro X, and video editing will be done in Final Cut Pro X (or iMovie for those without Final Cut). This course is therefore only suitable for those people using Apple computers.

About the tutors:

Gerard McChrystal has been running saxophone courses at Benslow for many years alongside his teaching positions at RWCMD and Trinity Laban. More recently, Alastair has been coaching alongside Gerard on the saxophone courses at Benslow. Alastair has much experience of music technology and is Visiting Professor of Saxophone and Electronics at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In July 2020 Gerard and Alastair ran their first online saxophone course for Benslow, covering many aspects of music technology as well as saxophone technique. The course received excellent feedback, with many students enjoying learning about technology. Following the course Alastair and Gerard were inspired to plan a new course for all musicians focussing specifically on home recording and editing techniques that are now so crucial to musicians.

Requirements for the course:

Stable internet connection

Zoom video conferencing software

Logic Pro X (for audio recording/editing/mixing)

Desirable:

Final Cut Pro X (for video editing)

iMovie (if you do not have Final Cut Pro X)

Please note: a large amount of the course will be focussed on audio recording and editing, for which Logic Pro X is essential. There will also be sessions on video editing; these will primarily be in Final Cut Pro X, but if necessary we can split the group and run parallel sessions in both Final Cut Pro X and iMovie. (iMovie is free to download)
