What is the course about?
A singing course for female voices exploring wide ranging repertoire, from medieval to contemporary and from varying cultures, led by Sarah Tenant-Flowers, conductor and artistic director of the UK’s leading professional female voice consort Papagena.
Participants will sing and explore the interpretation of a very wide range of sacred and secular music drawn from Papagena’s distinctive and diverse repertoire, including sessions on the following topics:
sacred music from Georgia, Armenia and Russia
folk legends and lullabies from around the world
English music from the medieval and 20th century eras
contemporary popular Canadian and American repertoire
popular and folk ballads
humourous pieces for female voices
alternative arrangements of popular Christmas carols
call and response songs from medieval England and Spain
In addition there will be an opportunity (optional) to study an extended work for upper voices (either Randall Thompson Alleluia or Orazio Vecchi’s Stabat Mater Dolorosa).
Vocal technique training will be embedded into the course.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…
Sing a wide range of repertoire for upper voices including medieval, folk, contemporary and classical
Learn about style and interpretation relevant to each piece
Develop vocal skills and learn appropriate vocal techniques relevant to each piece
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Nearly all of the repertoire will be learned from sheet music, so the ability to read music is essential. In addition, the majority of the repertoire is written in 3 to 5 separate voice parts, so the ability to hold a musical line independently is desirable.
How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?
No advance preparation is required. Participants will form a choir and will sing throughout each session. Feedback will be given to the group as a whole during the course.
There will also be the opportunity for collaboration during the free time on Saturday afternoon to sing through work composed by participants on the concurrent composing course.
Will music be provided in advance of the course?
Sheet music will be provided by the tutor upon arrival at the course. Unfortunately it is not possible to send out music prior to the course, though nearer the time, it may be possible to make a few pieces available for download.
