What is the course about?

This course will focus on the rhythms and melodies of Latin America, with an emphasis placed on Brazilian and Cuban music. Students will explore defining characteristics and traditional approaches of Latin Jazz within large and small ensemble settings.

As well as their main instrument, participants will have the opportunity to play native percussion instruments at various points within the course if they choose, although this is optional.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

- Play a variety of small and big band Latin Jazz repertoire

- Identify key features of Latin rhythms

- Play various Latin percussion

- Identify prominent figures in Latin Jazz

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Standard: Intermediate, Advanced

No prior jazz experience is necessary, but participants should already have comfortable facility with the instrument they choose to play at Latin JazzFest.  Confidence with basic scales is helpful.

String Players - we strongly recommend you consider bringing amplification as the course regularly attracts over 20 musicians and several of the participants play brass instruments.’ 

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

Practical work as a full group and smaller groups with course leaders

Participants will receive feedback from the tutors

No specific preparation is necessary, but brushing up on scales and arpeggios is recommended

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

Yes, music will be available online to print out at home one week before the start of the course. It will also be distributed by the tutors throughout the course.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Your instrument, a notebook and pencil, a folder for music
