Philip Haworth, oboist in the Atéa Quintet and member of Riot Ensemble, will guide you through healthy warmups and enjoyable exercises to help you develop your technique and gain confidence as a player. We will work on solo repertoire and oboe ensemble pieces to achieve an improved ear for intonation and a feeling of ‘we’re in this together’. Sessions will cover different aspects of oboe playing and the course will culminate in an informal performance of an ensemble piece. There will be an optional exploration of contemporary techniques during the free Saturday afternoon session.

Philip Haworth is a founding member of the award-winning Atéa Quintet and a member of leading new music group Riot Ensemble. With a varied international playing career, Philip has performed with orchestras including the Orchestra of Opera North, Hallé, Den Fynske Opera in Denmark, Birmingham Contemporary Music Ensemble, London Mozart Players and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He is also passionate about teaching and tutors on courses including The Malvern Winds, Dartington International Music Festival, Vilalte Masterclasses in France and the Wind Quintet Retreat.

What will we cover?

All aspects of oboe playing from a good warm-up, basic technique, musicality and, of course, reeds!

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to...

- Feel more confident playing with others and alone

- Explore new repertoire

- Learn tips to take playing to next level

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Confident, Skilful.

This course is for any more advanced players, with an enthusiasm to try new things and generally ‘have a go’.

How will this course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

The course will include playing as a group, individual spots to perform repertoire and generally having a wonderful time with our double reed instruments!

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

All ensemble music will be sent out before the course. Please bring a solo repertoire piece for oboe without piano you would like to work on (this can be a study or piece).

There is a wide range of music on IMSLP if you are struggling.

It would be very helpful for everyone to submit what they will play at least one week before the course so we can facilitate music preparation.

Is there anything I need to bring?

Just your oboe and any other oboe family member instruments you would like to play over the weekend. The tutor will have some surprise instruments for you to try as well!
