This course will focus on lyrical bass clarinet and piano repertoire. Sessions will focus on expressive playing and technique and also feature an all-bass clarinet ensemble!

What is the course about? 

This course will be aimed at developing lyrical and expressive playing through repertoire for bass clarinet and piano and whole bass clarinet choir settings. 

Sessions exploring general technique and control via a set list of bass clarinet and piano repertoire that features expressive repertoire (including song transcriptions), will be balanced alongside music for a massed bass clarinet ensemble that includes original works and transcriptions. 

The lyrical repertoire component of the course will involve sessions running side by side on: 

  1. Technique (Sarah Watts) – aspects of bass clarinet technique including embouchure, sound and colour control, fingering advice, and incorporating expressive phrasing into core works 

  1. Bass clarinet and piano (Antony Clare) – in a supportive small group environment (a suggested list of repertoire will be provided)  

There will be a performance by Sarah and Antony on the Saturday evening, and an informal final performance in the last session of the choir works. 

What will we cover? 

Bass clarinet ensemble repertoire to include a world premiere by Basha Öberg and a work by Jonathan Russell. 

Bass clarinet and piano repertoire.  

What will we accomplish?

By the end of this course you will...

- Have an expanded knowledge of the bass clarinet/piano repertoire 

- Be able to apply an array of useful tips, advice and knowledge on technique to develop and improve your own playing  

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills? 

Confident, Skilful 

Participants should be to be Grade 7or above, have some experience of playing in an ensemble, and be comfortable performing solo. 

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required? 

There will be a mixture of whole group classes plus sessions where participants are divided into two groups. 

Participants should come having decided on a suitable piece for bass clarinet and piano to explore. It does not have to be at a polished level.  

Will music be provided in advance of the course? 

Parts for the bass clarinet ensemble will be sent out in advance. 

You will need to bring your own music (parts for you and piano) for your chosen solo piece 

Is there anything I need to bring? 

Your instrument, plus reeds and any other things required to keep your bass clarinet in good working order.
