Come and explore the celebratory and soulful music of Jewish Eastern Europe in a klezmer kapelye (ensemble). We will use printed music to learn melodies and bass lines, and explore how to create accompaniments and harmonies within the tradition. Dance music studied will included sher, zhok, terkisher, and bulgar, and we will also look at using klezmer modes to create our own doynes (slow melodies). No previous experience necessary but you should know the names of notes on your instrument in terms of fingering, be able to find them with confidence, and be able to play scales and arpeggios in (concert pitch) C, D, F, G major and minor.
