What is the course about?

Participants (of approximately Grade 7 standard and above) are invited to bring a broad repertoire of songs and arias in any language to work on during the course – please bring about four pieces in any style. Sarah and Stephen will explore how to improve communication with your audience by gaining deeper insights into the music and the texts. Sarah will offer up to date technical information and discuss how technique can enhance your interpretation. She will examine ways of removing the physical tensions that can adversely affect singing. Please let us know in advance what songs you have chosen. Duets are also welcome and can be arranged through Sarah. There is a participants’ concert on the final afternoon and we often include a short choral piece prepared during the course. A ticket will also be included for Sarah and Stephen’s recital on the Monday evening.

What will we cover?

Interpretation of Art Song in any language (Lieder, French Song, English songs etc), Oratorio, operatic recitative and arias. Operetta. Help with vocal technique, languages and communication.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

Gain knowledge of the repertoire in general, gain confidence in performance of your songs through enhanced interpretative and technical skills.

What previous participants said about this course…

“A superb course with an excellent tutor and pianist/accompanist. They both put in such hard work to make the course work well and it really did work fantastically well. Their comments and suggestions to each student were so helpful. The tutor and accompanist catered so well for the needs of each student and as a group. I will certainly be attending many more courses as I loved it so much.”

“DEFINITELY give it a go worth every penny as you will be surprised how much you learn from the excellent tutors, and other students, the very interesting repertoire and how many lovely other singers you meet. Also the staff, food and accommodation are excellent. A very well run and managed Music College. I will certainly be attending many more courses at Benslow Music!”

“Encouraging, challenging but non-threatening. Everyone is very supportive and we all have fun.”

“Well worth doing. Sarah made sure that we each had a similar amount of time to sing. Beyond that it is always interesting to hear what other people do and what she says about technique especially. The standard this year was very high, some very accomplished singing. It is run on a master class basis but each student gets the same attention.”
