This year's course will celebrate Dietrich Buxtehude and explore highlights from the Abendmusiken, the Advent-tide public concerts which he organised at St Mary's, Lubeck and with which he made his name as the foremost composer of the German-speaking lands in the late seventeenth century. Our main focus will be excerpts from his great cycle, Membra Jesu Nostri. After the glee of Man singet mit Freuden vom Sieg we will move into Christmas itself with his radiant Das neugeborne Kindelein. There will also be a wealth of instrumental writing by Buxtehude and his contemporaries for instrumentalists to explore with Joe, and ample opportunities for soloists within the choir, though no pressure to be a soloist. We have places for a maximum of 6 baroque violins (3 and 2 part writing), 2 baroque violas or tenor viols, 1 baroque cello, bass violin or bass viol, baroque bassoon, 1 violone (either 8’ or 16’), 2 harpsichords and/or organ, and 1 theorbo. We will perform at A=415. Both singers and players need to be strong sight-readers.
