What is the course about?

The focus of this course will aim to take advantage of the opportunities to create music online while still using a wide variety of styles, as we have done in the past. One of the advantages of an online course is that we will be to explore how we listen to ourselves within the overall musical sound. As usual there will be assistance with basic technical skills such as breathing, posture and musicianship, and no prior experience of recording is expected. This will all be covered. Players of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet and any saxophone are welcome. There are also parts for French horn.

What will we cover?

Four pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 21st century will be prepared. Two as live Soundscapes, and two as individual tracks to be recorded individually over the weekend. All works selected are considered accessible.

What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…

Listen in a new way, and develop practice skills to help with recording. Develop musicianship and technical skills to include new ideas for practising and experience of new musical styles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Lower/Upper Intermediate

Some basic sight-reading skill is useful. Parts for flutes and clarinets are to some extent progressive so an easier option is available if preferred.

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

Four pieces will be sent in advance. The online sessions will be a mixture of explanation and guidance, playing, and group discussion. Techniques such as breathing, posture, articulation, finger-work and ways to practise are addressed where the music demands. Questions and requests are encouraged. The final session of the course is an informal performance of any work covered.

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

Yes, it will be emailed in advance.

Is there anything I need to bring?

A computer/tablet with camera and microphone and a stable internet connection is ideal.
