What is the course about?

The course offers an intensive look at the extraordinary world of Eric Satie. Stephen has performed the complete piano works of Satie, and as part of the course will give lecture-recitals which will reveal some of the many extraordinary byways of Satie’s works and his quirky writings. There will also be tuition on individual pieces as well as the playing of duets and a group performance of Vexations. Participants should bring along two or three pre-prepared pieces by Satie to work on during the course. A list of suggested repertoire can be provided in advance for all levels. You are also welcome to come along as a listener.

What will we cover?

Examination of the life, musical works and writings of Eric Satie. Insights into pacing, pedalling and colouring the piano pieces. alongside suggestions for fingering and help with general technical issues of piano playing. A chance to play together with the other participants.

How will the course be taught, and will any preparation be required?

The course will be a mixture of lecture-recitals, tuition and playing together. Stephen will offer invaluable advice and insight on how to pace, pedal and generally colour your performances in a mutually supportive class environment. There will also be an opportunity for everyone to play duets together based on Satie’s works as well as playing together his famous Vexations. You are also welcome to come along as a listener.

Will music be provided in advance of the course?

Participants should bring their own copies of the music they intend to play.  Stephen will also provide copies of all the pieces so that everyone can see them.
