What is the course about?
Joss Campbell and Mel Orriss have studied, worked and played together for well over thirty years, since meeting on their first day of 6th form at Chetham’s School of Music. They share a kindred love and enthusiasm with all things flute and have developed a working chemistry that sees their workshops in demand all over the country. Each day will start with warm ups to get your flute bodies and minds ready for the day followed by a sound and finger agility workshop, with music specifically designed for playing together, working on posture, breathing, sound and fingers. The rest of the day will be divided up between massed flute choir rehearsals, and small chamber group coaching during which Joss and Mel will offer guidance on ensemble technique and rehearsal strategies. The whole selection of the Wonderful Winds Flute Catalogue will be available to use as a resource for the entirety of the course and the Wonderful Winds shop will be also be on site for those who wish to browse and shop. There will be an informal concert on the last afternoon of the course to family and friends if appropriate.

What will we cover?
Whole group warm ups – sound work, posture, breathing, intonation, engaging your diaphragm, dynamics and finger agility.
Massed flute choir – using repertoire from the Wonderful Winds catalogue, coached and conducted by Mel and Joss, you will experience playing in various positions in the choir.
Small chamber groups – (quartets or quintets). Mel and Joss will co-ordinate different groups and combinations for each afternoon session where you will have the full Wonderful Winds library from which to choose repertoire. You will rehearse under their guidance, receiving coaching on ensemble technique and rehearsal strategies.
What will we accomplish? By the end of this course you will be able to…
Know how to work on your sound; have awareness of correct posture and techniques to adjust intonation in relation to dynamic levels; how to improve breathing and engage your diaphragm.
Perform the various repertoire rehearsed through the week in an informal concert on the last afternoon.
