Another alluring Summer String Orchestra course. This time Jonathan Trout, aided by Clare Morgan and Sarah Pope, offers participants the chance to work on Mendelssohn’s Octet Op 20 which contains a specially written bass part. Mendelssohn himself said ‘this Octet must be played by all instruments in symphonic orchestral style’ so it works well in the large format. Violinists should nominate two parts they would like to play though they should be flexible if required. Violas and cellists should select 1 or 2 but be prepared to play either should a question of balance arise. Course members should bring their own parts for this. We will also be working on Handel’s Concerto Grosso Op 6 No 12 in B minor, Sibelius’s Impromptu, Janacek’s Idyll and Pachelbel’s Chaconne in E minor Arr. Robert Müller-Hartman. This course will again run alongside Christopher Gayford’s Conducting Summer School, and we are offering the chance for collaboration during the afternoon break for those who wish to work with some aspiring conductors
